About Me

Picture
I am an Assistant Professor of Urban Studies at NYU Shanghai. My research program explores three interrelated topics: 1) How mortgage credit markets shape patterns of inequality and access to housing, with a particular focus on racial and neighborhood disparities and financial innovation. 2) The causes and outcomes of neighborhood change, including gentrification and price appreciation on the one hand, and population loss and disinvestment on the other. 3) The nexus between housing and health outcomes, including health risks presented by housing’s location near climate hazards.

My work has appeared in scholarly journals including Cities, Housing Policy Debate, Housing Studies, the Journal of the American Planning Association, the Journal of Urban Affairs, Race and Social Problems, Urban Affairs Review and Urban Studies. It has also been cited by or appeared in a number of media outlets including the New York Times, Slate, Governing, Next City, Planetizen, and Shelterforce.

I am a faculty affiliate at NYU's Furman Center, the NYU Wagner School of Public Service, the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis, and at NYU Shanghai's Key Laboratory of Urban Design and Urban Science (LOUD). I have professional experience in the public education, affordable housing development, and research sectors. I hold a PhD in Urban Planning from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), a Master in Urban Planning degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (GSD) and a BA in Political Science from Pepperdine University.
